When Does Deer Hunting Season Start

It requires a passion or practice of hunting various species of deer. From the ancient age, people hunt deer as a source of food, shelter, or making weapons.

Hunters gain huge knowledge about the environment, animal nature, and also safety during hunting. There are many benefits of deer hunting. It is legal, traditional, and ethical.

Hunting keeps humans connected to animals. It plays a major role in maintaining wildlife conservation. Hunting seasons are established to avoid mainly nesting and mating season.

To maintain a balance between wildlife and the environment, some laws were passed. So one must follow the hunting season to save or maintain a balance between wildlife population and the natural environment.

Season of Deer Hunting of Different Species:

As there are different species of deer found in the world, hunting season also differs from one another. Some hunting seasons of different species of deer are described in this part.

Moose Deer

Moose deer are large in number and they have short tails and black fur. Their fur protects them from extreme cold. Generally hunting for Moose deer starts at September. The hunting season for Moose deer is short.

White-tailed Deer

The season of hunting of White-tailed deer starts at the end of September and continues up to the beginning of November which is only for Archery. For the north zone, it starts in November and ends in January. And for the south zone, it is from October to January.

Sambar Deer

Sambar deer is yellowish-brown in color. The season for hunting Sambar deer is restricted to 1st April to 30th November. Breeding of Sambar deer can happen anytime throughout the year.

Chital Deer

They have white spots in their body and so they also are known as spotted deer. The Main hunting season for Chital deer is December to February. June and July is also the hunting season for Chital deer. Chital deer can be seen at any time throughout the year.


The size of female deer is smaller than male deer. They are commonly known as Caribou. In Iceland, reindeer hunting is very popular. In Greenland, deer hunting plays an important role as a source of protein, clothing. The hunting season for reindeer is generally from July to September.

Fallow Deer

Fallow deer are medium-sized and they have a comparatively longer tails than the other. The hunting season of fallow male deer is from August to April and for female fallow deer, this time is from October to February.

Sika Deer

Sika deer are mainly found in Japan, China, New Zealand, and Denmark. They remain more active during the night. The hunting season of sika deer is mainly from August to April for stags in England and in Scotland, it starts in July and ends in October. For hinds in England, it is from November to March and for Scotland, the hunting season is in between October and February.

Chinese Water Deer

Chinese water deer are the smallest among all other species of deer. They are found in Asia, mainly in China. They are the only species that lack antlers and have inguinal glands. Their hunting season, for both male and female deer, starts in November and ends in March.

 Indian Muntjac Deer

They are commonly known as barking deer or red muntjac and they are one of the primeval species of deer. They are mainly found in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, southern China, and Sri Lanka. There is no closed or limited hunting season for muntjac deer.

Roe Deer

Roe deer or western roe deer are found all over Europe. Local people hunt roe deer which is a source of great income. They are comparatively small than other species of deer and reddish-brown in color. Hunting season for Roe male deer is from April to October whereas for female deer the hunting season is between November and March.


Hunters cannot hunt deer anytime they want. There are some restrictions and a bag limit. The bag limit helps to maintain a healthy wildlife population and the environment. So hunters must hunt only during the hunting season to keep the environment healthy and well-balanced.
