Overview: Albert Gallatin served in multiple roles in the early U.S. government, but is best remembered for his 13-year tenure as Secretary of the Treasury, under Presidents Jefferson and Madison. While he served, he helped reduce national debt, passed the Louisiana Purchase, and funded Lewis and Clark’s exploration. Today you can learn about Gallatin’s life and role in our nation’s government and history at Friendship Hill, his historic country estate.
