Fort Union National Monument

Size: 721 Acres

Overview: Within a sweeping valley of short grass prairie, amid the swales of the Santa Fe Trail, the formidable Fort Union was a catalyst for political and cultural change, welcomed or not. During 1851-1891, this was the largest military fort in the region.

The park is divided into two units. The main unit includes the second fort, a Civil War earthwork, and the adobe building ruins of the third fort. The second unit is detached and contains part of the first Fort Union plus the adobe ruins of the third fort’s arsenal.

Fees, permits, and reservations may apply.
