Overview: The City of Vicksburg, located on the Mississippi River, played a crucial role in the Civil War. Both President Davis and President Lincoln were well aware of its importance for the South, the Confederacy, and the entire nation. Davis called it "the nail head that holds the South's two halves together," and Lincoln called it "the key" necessary to break apart the two halves and end the Confederacy.
