De Soto National Memorial

Size: 27 Acres

Overview: Perhaps not as famous as Cortes or Pizarro, the conquistador Hernando de Soto was still an influential and significant player in the history of the United States, and in fact the world.  He and his men landed in Tampa Bay in May 1539, beginning a bloody and dramatic adventure that lasted four years and spanned 4,000 miles.  The De Soto National Memorial sheds some light on the life of this Spanish explorer, and his lasting impact on history.
